"This year's Juno Awards have a new category: metal/hard-music album of the year.
"Eligible albums include metal, metalcore, hardcore, heavy rock, thrash metal, death metal and their respective sub-genres including (but not limited to) nu-metal, power metal, grindcore, extreme metal, industrial metal, Viking metal, folk metal, doom metal, gothic metal, speed metal and sludge metal," the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences announced Wednesday in a news release.
So expect a few faded T-shirts adorned with obscure band names, road-worn jeans and plenty of tattoos among the more stylishly clothed artists as this bunch rides into battle for the 41st annual Juno Awards, held in Ottawa from March 26 to April 1.
The new award pushes the total Juno categories to 41.
In order to be eligible, works must have been released between Sept. 1, 2010 and Nov. 1, 2011. They are judged based on artistic merit and technical proficiency, and not on album sales."
Eff Yes, take that Grammys. It always kills me whenever I see more rock groups/ categories get the shaft. Now they have categories like best female pop, male pop, pop group, pop ensemble....SCREW ALL THAT! Recognizing and adulating many acts that nobody will know of in the coming years! Still laughing at how after more than 35 years, Judas Priest finally won a grammy and it was in the preshow...many of the comments followed around who are those old guys? Why would anyone listen to them? Kudos Canada, and kudos Junos for taking a step to show how truly diverse rock music is!

Cannot the Kingdom of Salvation Take Me Home?
Just thought I'd mention, today this September 27, 2011 marks the 25th anniversary of the death of Cliff Lee Burton. In my opinion Cliff has been the most influential member of Metallica during the good ol days of the bay area Thrash movement.
He was the only one that actually had a education in music, which he used to always challenge and expose the rest of the band to new and unorthodox methods. As a result the masterpieces such as Master of Puppets, Kill em all, and my favourite Ride the Lightning were conceived. While I was not born yet (short by one year) I can't put myself in a position to mourn or reminisce but I can honestly say that it was this man who influenced me to pick up my weapon of choice, the bass. The first songs I learned were Anesthesia (pulling teeth), Orion, and Creeping Death; the holy triumvirate of his legacy in my opinion!
Gone but never forgotten

Hey.
I'm not a pyromaniac, or a car flipper,
and I didn't trash Sears, or Chapters, or the CBC screens
and I don't know Johnny, Sunny or Raj from Granville Street
although I'm certain they're really, really drunk.
I have a jersey and car flag, not a Molotov cocktail.
I cheer all the time, not just when we're winning.
I can proudly wear my jersey daily, not just on game days.
I believe in puck-handling, not crosschecking; passing, not tripping;
and that the Canucks are still the best team in the league
A fan is proud, a fire is to keep warm, and it's a beer, not a weapon; a beer.
Canucks were the best in the regular season this year.
All of Canada cheered us on! and we'll be the best again next year!
My name is Peter!! And I am True Canucks Fan!
Get off my Bandwagon
Thank you.

Canucks Prayer
Our Father, who art in Rogers Arena,
Hockey be thy name.
Thy will be done, Lord Stanley's Cup will be won,
on home ice as well away.
Give us this day our hockey sticks, and forgive us our penalties,
as we forgive those who crosscheck against us.
Lead us not into elimination,
but deliver us to victory,
in the name of the fans, the Vancouver Canucks and the Holy Puck.
Amen!

Sage Wisdom
Quote of the day from one of my favourite photographers, Chase Jarvis.
"by trying to please everyone, you end up pleasing no one, especially not yourself.
But fear not (or fear less, perhaps). The answer is simple.
1. Shoot what you love.
2. Pimp that work.
3. Repeat."

Getcha Pull!
It's always really absurd to me when I hear of people speak of heavy music. Angry aggressive music as being negative or unhealthy for children, so on... blah blah blah! Firstly, the playing of ferocious music is the healthiest release of anger for the performer of it. It is alchemy, it is a metamorphosis, it is turning something potentially destructive and a source of misery into something beautiful, something rocking, and something uplifting for the band and the audience. The tradition of pain and hurt being a muse for great art is one of the greatest rites of passage for any artist and that which touches us deeply!

Lend a Hand
By now you've probably heard of the devastating earthquake in Japan that happened yesterday. Please keep Japan in your thoughts and prayers. Just thought I'd share this effort from google, was just launched to track people in Japan. So if you have any information on friends or family I'm sure it will help immensely! I know this will help, personally from my experience I have several friends in Japan and have contacted some families from my travels there a few years ago! Every bit helps, spread the word!

Truly an emotional, humble and tragic story. Yet at the same time it is an extremely uplifting look into the life of a man who has shown such resilience to overcome any odds to pursue his passion in music! Cannot wait for this to come out!

Politicians are Like Mushrooms, they Thrive on Crap
So it's that time of year again on campus, student society (ams) elections....another waste of time. It was almost comical a few days ago when the candidates took over one of the common areas in the student building to pitch their platform. I guess it was a strong correlation on how useless they are because a whole bunch of them didn't even show! No crap eh?
It was almost like a children's comedy the way it played out. Nobody was really listening, I sure as hell wasn't. There was some keener (who would make an excellent member of the NDP) who was calling people out on crap like how many senate meetings they've been to, "cause i've been to a lot man!" All the candidates knew each other and were horsing around blowing bubbles and stuff, it was like a giant meeting of the ego club. Question sessions rapidly degenerated: Team Jacob or edward? Who do you have a mancrush on? Crap like that... also, everything they said was all the same: sustainability this, lower tuition that, we need to be treated like adults (kinda ironic no?)! So it takes weeks for relentless self promotion to appeal to a very small minority, all to decide who gets on the VIP list that "represents" the students' "best interests"; in other words, they just listen to the board and just have to sit there and take it as they find more ways to screw people over! Who am I to care? I'm done in a few months anways! By the time anything is implemented, such as the much vaunted rapid transit to campus....everyone that suffered through that presentation will be long gone! Call me pessimistic, but it's not far from the truth!
They say being involved in student politics will prepare you for the future, what other alternatives are there (note sarcasm)? I guess the main lesson they can learn applies in the wisdom that all politicians should pay heed to: learn when to shut your damn mouth!
But I digress...

Romans: Facepalm
Reg: All right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?
Attendee: Brought peace?
Reg: Oh, peace - shut up!
Reg: There is not one of us who would not gladly suffer death to rid this country of the Romans once and for all.
Dissenter: Uh, well, one.
Reg: Oh, yeah, yeah, there's one. But otherwise, we're solid.
