"This year's Juno Awards have a new category: metal/hard-music album of the year.

"Eligible albums include metal, metalcore, hardcore, heavy rock, thrash metal, death metal and their respective sub-genres including (but not limited to) nu-metal, power metal, grindcore, extreme metal, industrial metal, Viking metal, folk metal, doom metal, gothic metal, speed metal and sludge metal," the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences announced Wednesday in a news release.

So expect a few faded T-shirts adorned with obscure band names, road-worn jeans and plenty of tattoos among the more stylishly clothed artists as this bunch rides into battle for the 41st annual Juno Awards, held in Ottawa from March 26 to April 1.

The new award pushes the total Juno categories to 41.

In order to be eligible, works must have been released between Sept. 1, 2010 and Nov. 1, 2011. They are judged based on artistic merit and technical proficiency, and not on album sales."


Eff Yes, take that Grammys. It always kills me whenever I see more rock groups/ categories get the shaft. Now they have categories like best female pop, male pop, pop group, pop ensemble....SCREW ALL THAT! Recognizing and adulating many acts that nobody will know of in the coming years! Still laughing at how after more than 35 years, Judas Priest finally won a grammy and it was in the preshow...many of the comments followed around who are those old guys? Why would anyone listen to them? Kudos Canada, and kudos Junos for taking a step to show how truly diverse rock music is!
